Operates a counselling centre dedicated to providing services to Francophone women who have experienced any type of violence including sexual, physical, psychological, verbal, economical

Offers an array of services including the following:

• Fem'aide, a 24-hour crisis telephone service
• Individual counselling
• Support groups
• Referrals to other community agencies and services
• Crisis intervention services
• Accompaniment to various appointments and meetings
• Public education and awareness campaigns

Provides a culturally based program to support and address concerns of Indigenous youth who are at risk of negative behaviors

Addressing Violence

• Provides education on how to end violence in Indigenous communities
• Teaches about the effects of drug and alcohol abuse

Education

• Encourages youth to remain in school and provides support for obtaining high school diploma
• Offers homework assistance and time at the Centre to complete homework with access to computers and Internet

General Social Supports

• Provides individual counselling for areas that youth may be struggling with such as socialization and peer pressure
• Offers Native craft classes and regalia making sessions
• Teaches Native dancing, singing and drumming
• Allows the youth to participate in Elder's Circles

Healthy Living and Physical Development

• Holds individual and group educational sessions on healthy lifestyle choices including good nutrition and traditional food preparation
• Supervises non competitive recreational activities

Justice Intervention

• Accompanies any youth registered in agency programs to court proceedings if requested
• Provides education and information about the criminal justice system and court procedures

Youth in Care

• Provides cultural education and support for youth living in foster homes within community and also to biological and foster families

• Gives immediate legal assistance to individuals who appear in court without a lawyer
• Provides information about legal rights, obligation and the court process
• Provides assistance in the courtroom for bail hearings and sentencing
• Assists with diversions, guilty pleas and sentencing
• Helps determines if further duty counsel services are required or if the matter requires Legal Aid Ontario's assistance in retaining a lawyer

Provides assistance in specialized courts such as:

• Mental health
• Drug treatment
• Domestic violence
• Aboriginal persons (Gladue) court

Note: Criminal duty counsel cannot assist with trials

• Operates an emergency shelter for women who have been victims of physical, emotional, sexual or financial abuse, and their children
• Supports older women who are escaping abuse from a live-in caregiver
• Operates Brookwood Apartments

Offers a variety of support services including:

• Safety planning
• Transitional and housing support
• Family Court Support Worker Program

Provides support to both children and their mothers and offers practical assistance with the following:

• Staying safe
• After-school activities
• Coaching in mothering after abuse
• Coaching in cooperative play and peaceful solutions for home and school

Provides individual and group counselling

Topics include:

• Empowerment
• Positive solutions to the effects of abuse
• Safety planning
• Stress management
• Strengthening self-esteem and self-confidence
• Well-being for the short and long-term

Offers a variety of core mental health services designed to assist individuals address everyday mental health concerns, mental health problems and mental illness using a combination of Western and Traditional practices

Services offered include:

• Art/Craft Drop-In
• Meditation
• Men's Support Groups and Workshops
• Mindful Way Workshops
• Scheduled counselling sessions
• Soup Drop-In

Due to Covid-19, the Mission is only able to provide bagged meals through a takeout window twice a day
 

• Operates a warming shelter and drop-in centre

Offers a variety of drop-in services including:

• Assists people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, to obtain and maintain housing
• Offers culturally-relevant, wholistic and supportive programs and services that address issues related to homelessness of urban Indigenous people

During COVID-19 pandemic, the office is closed to the public. However, staff are working from home and continue to provide intakes and counselling by telephone or video conferencing.  Anyone new looking to access services are encouraged to call 705-671-5495 or email VFW@hsnsudbury.ca to make an appointment.

Provides community-based, ongoing, longer-term sexual assault counselling and support services for women including:

• Crisis intervention
• Individual and group counselling
• Safety planning
• Community outreach
• Court support
• Drop-in resource room
• Information and referral to community resources

• Provides free and confidential counselling support to men who have experienced sexual abuse or assault
• Helps men develop positive coping skills

Member agency of Support Services Network for Male Survivors in Ontario (North Region)

Offers general counselling to individuals, couples, families and teens

Helps individuals with a variety of issues, such as:

• Anxiety
• Depression
• Grief
• Low self-esteem
• Parenting issues
• Relationships
• Stress

Offers a range of recovery programming that individuals can participate in for free, including:

• Creative Expression programs (quilting, multimedia arts and workshops)
• Occupational Vocational programming (community based skill building workshops and volunteer opportunities)
• Recovery and Wellness Programming (Physical Activity, Food is Mood, Sharing Circle, Zumba, Drumming, etc)
• Peer Support (one-on-one and in groups)
• Family Support Night (peer-led group support to family members of people living with mental illness)
• Bereaved by Suicide Support Group (peer-led support to individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide)
• M.O.M.S/Mothers Offering Mutual Support group (peer-led support to moms 14 weeks pregnant up to two years post-partum who are experiencing mood changes)
• WRAP/Wellness Recovery Action Plan (8 week course - registration required)

• Offers on-site early intervention and crisis intervention
• Provides needs assessment, safety planning and referrals to community services
• Offers enhanced support for vulnerable victims
• Provides assistance with applications to VQRP+

Victim Quick Response Program+ (VQRP+)

Provides assistance with emergency expenses related to the incident, including:

• home safety
• accommodation
• meals
• transportation
• basic necessities
• dependent care costs
• counselling
• traditional Indigenous health services
• cellular phones
• vision care
• dental care
• aids for victims with disabilities
• interpretation services
• crime scene cleanup
• government/medical documents
• funeral expenses

Additional assistance for victims of human trafficking includes:

• storage locker
• tattoo removal
• treatment at a recovery facility

Note: No direct reimbursement to victims for above supports


Financial support also available for:

• victims who sustained serious physical injuries during a crime
• parents of child homicide victims
• spouses of homicide victims

• Offers counselling and treatment services for individuals who have mental health concerns or have been diagnosed with a mental illness

Provides group-based therapy for individuals who are experiencing:

• Bi-Polar Disorder
• Depression
• Generalized Anxiety Disorders
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
• Social Anxiety

COVID19 Update: Court case backlog -- clients may experience difficulties contacting local offices and should leave a message with return phone number; VWAP staff will return voicemail as soon as possible

• Provides information and assistance to support participation in the criminal court process
• Services begin once police have laid charges and continue until the court case is over

Vulnerable Victims and Family Fund

Provides financial and court-based supports to enable victims of crime and families of homicide victims to attend court, including:

• Language interpretation
• Real-time captioning or other equipment for victims with disabilities
