Provides mental health services for First Nation individuals and families in the Sioux Lookout area

Provides the following services:

• Intake, assessment and case management services
• Individual and family counselling for various issues including but not limited to, bereavement, grief, family violence, suicide
• Education, resources and training seminars in northern First Nation communities on mental health issues

Acute Care Services

• Provides intensive counselling for individuals requiring acute care services

Special Needs Program

• Offers case management and mental health services for children and youth with special needs including emotional, developmental and/or intellectual problems
• Provides support to parents/families in accessing other resources and financial assistance
• Offers advocacy on behalf of clients/families for other services

Specialty Sessions

• Coordinates specialty clinics including psychiatry, tele-psychiatry, psychology and art therapy
• Provides tele-conferencing with Sick Children's Hospital and other health providers
• Offers education and information sessions with visiting specialists

Supports reduction or prevention of family and community violence

• Provides victim service referrals and emergency support for family violence
• Works one-on-one with families experiencing family violence to develop a plan of action for identified concerns
• Provides referrals to counselling, legal services, and treatment centres
• Offers Indigenous culture-based healing, self-help processes for anger management, and positive self-image development; alternative discipline methods and positive relationships
• Organizes and facilitates community events in schools, powwows, and health fairs to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevention of family violence
• Develops programs, workshops, promotions, and prevention education campaigns dealing with family-based violence awareness

• Focus is on improving the overall health and well-being of communities and to empower families to build healthy relationships
• Works to eliminate family violence, the number of youth involved in the justice system and the number of children in care

Aftercare Services

Provides the following services aimed at preventing alcohol and drug abuse problems from reoccurring:

• Promotes the development of good mental health and provides services for individuals with mental health issues
• Provides the services of mental health workers who work with community members as needed

• Provides assistance to Anishinaabe clients in accessing health care at the Dryden Regional Health Centre and the Dryden Area Family Health Team
• Bridges gap between western medicine and traditional healing practices

Offers the following services:

• Advocacy and support at the Dryden Regional Health Centre
• Advocacy to access Non-Insured Health benefits
• Collaboration with Health Directors of local First Nations
• Language translation for clients and medical professionals in Ojibway and Oji-Cree
• Participation in outreach clinics for Anishinaabe people
• Referrals to traditional healers as requested
• Traditional counselling

Offers a methadone maintenance program for opiate addicts based on an intensive outpatient model, over a 12-24 month period

Services include:

• Initial intake screening procedure
• Signed treatment contract
• Focused medical examination
• Appropriate lab tests
• Initial and ongoing supervised urinalysis
• Weekly group and individual therapy
• Regular medical follow-up and supervision
• Regular daily Methadone dosing
• Treatment of addiction related illness and diseases such as Hepatitis C and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection
• After care program

• Diabetes Outreach and Screening Clinic, in partnership with the Dryden Native Friendship Centre
• Needle Exchange Program, in partnership with the Northwestern Health Unit
• Naloxone Overdose Response Program, in partnership with the Northwestern Health Unit - a lifesaving medication that can quickly restore the breathing of a person who has overdosed on heroin or prescription opioid pain medication

Provides off-site supervision and support to member communities in their implementation of the Community Wellness Worker (CWW) program

• Promotes healthy lifestyles through culturally based programs and healing
• Addresses and aims to reduce family violence

• Operates as the authority responsible for planning related to community, regional, secondary and tertiary health services needed to implement the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy AHWS

• Works to eliminate family violence, the number of youth involved in the justice system and the number of children in care

Activities and programs provided can include but are not limited to the following:

Provides a broad set of services that address the health and cultural needs of a largely Indigenous population and focuses on cross-cultural integration in five key aspects of all services:

Odabiidamageg (Governance and Leadership)

• Provides a board consisting of two-thirds Anishinaabe members and one-third non-native individuals
• Balances all committees with native and non-native members
• Consults with Elders, Native special advisors about key issues

Wiichi'iwewin (Patient and Client Supports)

• Provides interpreter services Mon-Sun 24 hours at all levels to optimize care planning and delivery
• Progressing towards offering translation of all symbols, information materials, signage and other materials into Anishinaabe languages
• Offers advice and support to patients and families from a traditional Elder including during critical illness and death of a family member
• Facilitates a cultural awareness and training program (Bimaadiziwin) to all Health Centre staff

Andaaw'iwewin (Traditional Healing Practices)

• Offers dedicated ceremonial, healing and related gathering and support spaces to allow for traditional healing services

Mashkiki (Traditional Medicines)

• Allows patients and families to use a limited range of traditional medicines under supervision
• Permits the use of sacred traditional medicines in healing ceremonies

Miichim (Traditional Foods)

• Provides a variety of traditional foods to patients, escorts and families such as bannock, wild rice, walleye, wild fish and game and herbs, plants and berries
• Observes and respects the traditional sacredness of food preparation (and provincial health regulations), storage, serving and disposal
• Provides rotating menus and cooking styles (smoked, dried etc) as possible, to both Native and non-Native cultures
