• Acts as a family and children's services liaison between Nipissing First Nation and the Children's Aid Societies from any location
• Offers family and child support with home visiting, office visits and court attendance with child welfare issues within the district

Foster CareProvides the following services to families in the system:

• Advocacy
• Case management
• Access services
• Community resources
• Referrals to other agencies and programs
• Remains in contact with the family until services are accessed or until needed services are accessed and family can advocate for themselves
• Provides assistance in the recruitment of new foster families within the community
• Endeavours to keep children within their home communities

Prevention Services

• Provides programs and services to children and youth to enhance their well being, including life skills mentoring, recreational activities, social activities and healthy lifestyles workshops
• Provides educational programs and resources to parents and families to strengthen family units

After School Kids SocialProvides a safe and healthy environment for children to attend after school until parents arrive home from work

Provides voluntary support and services to assist individuals who are struggling with mental health issues and/or addictions issues

Mental Health

• Assessments as deemed appropriate
• Counselling for individuals, couples and families

Supports individuals with a variety of issues including:

• Addiction
• Anxiety
• Conflict at work

• Provides individualized 24 hour emergency service to victims and survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence
• Provides emergency medical assessment and treatment

Provides initial emergency care only with the patient's informed consent, and may include all or part of the following:

• Assessment and treatment of injuries
• Testing/treatment/prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STI), including HIV
• Emergency contraceptives
• Reassurance and emotional support
• Collection of forensic evidence including photographs
• Risk assessment and safety planning
• Referral for medical follow up
• Referral to appropriate social agencies
• Referral to shelter and or other relevant community resources
• Police involvement, at victims request
• Storage of forensic evidence for up to six months if the patient is uncertain about involving the authorities

• Provides legal advice and assistance to low-income individuals
• Focuses on helping people get income maintenance benefits and maintain access to housing
• Provides services without cost to people who meet eligibility criteria
• Provides advice, assistance, and representation in courts or tribunals
• Facilitates legal education workshops in appropriate areas of law

Volunteers

• Recruits individuals to provide support to victims
• Provides individuals with specialized training at no cost

Volunteers will:

• Assist in developing a personalized safety plan for the victim
• Provide information about legal assistance and programs
• Offer referrals to long-term service providers within the community
• Provide temporary practical and emotional support

Provides public education, Alternative Dispute Resolution and counselling services
Intake and Assessment

• Assesses individuals needs and refers to appropriate agency program
• Provides referrals to other community resources when the agency is unable to assist

• Provides confidential counselling, education and advocacy
• Offers family, relationship, and individual counselling

Counsels on the following:

• Deaf identity
• Depression, anxiety or bipolar issues
• Domestic violence
• Grief and loss
• Personal development
• Relationship difficulties
• Trauma

Intake and Assessment

• Receives child protection referrals in confidence from the community
• Accepts allegations of child neglect and abuse
• Serves as general intake for all other programs and services offered

Child WelfareInvestigates allegations of child abuse and child neglect to determine the safety of the family environment for children

• Operates primary care medical clinic
• Offers an after-hours walk-in clinic clinic
• Provides access to other health care professionals within and outside of the Family Health Team, such as a dietitian and a mental health counsellor
• Coordinates documentation if patient receives care from a member of the team

Offers primary health care including but not limited to:

• Chronic disease education and prevention
• Disease management
• Health promotion
• Palliative care
• Rehabilitation

Telephone Health Advisory Service

• Provides access to a registered nurse that provides advice about urgent health care concerns
• Offers the opportunity to have family doctor receive a written summary of the call

Provides a culturally-based program to support and address concerns of Indigenous youth
Education

• Provides educational advocacy at Atikokan High School and St Pat's Separate School; in cases of school suspension, can offer student a place to spend time
• Offers homework time at the Centre with access to computers and Internet
• Assists with developing resumes, cover letters and completing job applications
• Participates in professional training courses including autism workshops, canoeing courses, food handling courses and smoking cessation workshops

Healthy Eating and Physical Development

• Holds individual and group discussions on healthy lifestyle choices including concerns and prevention of diabetes and high blood pressure and benefits of exercise
• Teaches a cooking class with a focus on healthy choices and the use of traditional foods
• Supervises and plans regular wilderness outings

Justice Intervention

• Provides support to incarcerated individuals including accompaniment to court hearings
• Accompanies any youth registered in agency programs to court proceedings if requested

Social Supports

• Provides individual support for areas youth may be struggling with such as socialization and peer pressure
• Supervises trips to cultural, educational or recreational activities

Violence Prevention

• Teaches about effects of drug and alcohol abuse
• Provides support for individuals undergoing drug and alcohol treatment

Youth in Care

• Provides cultural education and support for youth living in foster homes within community

All in-person services have been suspended; services are being provided remotely -- as at March 18, 2020 and until further notice

Works to empower and provide a voice for women and the communities in which they live in order to:

• Eliminate violence against women and children
• Create social change regarding issues of equality and justice
• Develop, apply and increase awareness of anti-oppressive approaches
• Provide healing from sexual violence

• Contraception methods including abstinence
• Healthy relationships
• Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
• Pregancy options including abortion referral
• Personal responsibility and decision making

• Gives immediate legal assistance to individuals who appear in court without a lawyer
• Provides information about legal rights, obligation and the court process
• Provides assistance in the courtroom for bail hearings and sentencing
• Assists with diversions, guilty pleas and sentencing
• Helps determines if further duty counsel services are required or if the matter requires Legal Aid Ontario's assistance in retaining a lawyer

Provides assistance in specialized courts such as:

• Mental health
• Drug treatment
• Domestic violence
• Aboriginal persons (Gladue) court

Note: Criminal duty counsel cannot assist with trials

COVID19 Update: Court case backlog -- clients may experience difficulties contacting local offices and should leave a message with return phone number; VWAP staff will return voicemail as soon as possible

Provides services that maintain and enhance the natural environments of home and community; that will ensure the safety of children, youth and of the public; that establishes partnerships with other community services; and that demonstrate management practices based on teamwork and professional ethics
