Provides alternative education for adult community members to obtain a high school diploma

Program objectives are as follows:

• Enable students to obtain secondary school credit courses in their home community
• Provide an alternative way to earn a provincial high school diploma (Ontario Secondary School Diploma OSSD)
• Promote First Nations culture

Program offers:

• A wide range of course selection delivered through Independent Learning Courses (ILCs), the Cooperative Education (Co-op) Program, Basic Skills upgrading, life skills and field trips
• Academic counselling and referrals to appropriate agencies as needed
• Participation in the mandatory Ontario Secondary Student Literacy Test (OSSLT) program

Student services can include:

• All necessary school supplies
• Counselling for post-secondary education planning
• Individual career planning with Ontario Works representative
• Transportation for any student living out of a reasonable walking range to program through Ontario Works
• Subsidized childcare, only for the hours a student is in school through Ontario Works

• Helps learners prepare for employment, apprenticeship, secondary-school credit, post-secondary education and greater independence

Supports High School Equivalency or OSSD

Provides an adult education learning centre

• Facilitates upgrading courses designed for adults who have not completed their high school education
• Participates in Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR), a systematic process to identify, self-assess, organize, describe and document one's knowledge, skills and attitudes that have been acquired over one's lifetime through formal education, workplace training and other life experiences such as volunteer and military work

• Basic office program learning
• Communication skills
• Computer skills
• Numeracy
• Reading
• Typing skills
• Writing

Provides employment consultants that provide personalized employment counselling and can assist with:

• Job search challenges related to hearing loss
• Career planning
• Resume and cover letter services
• Leads and referrals to potential job opportunities
• Preparing for interviews
• Arranging an interpreter or live translation of speech to text (CART) for interviews

Offers additional on the job support by working with the individual and the employer to:

• Find assistive technology and communication devices
• Identify and implement appropriate workplace accommodations for a barrier-free work environment
• Provide communication workshops for co-workers

Also provides employment services for employers and students

Offers a holistic and culturally inclusive alternative educational program for adults, providing:

• Individual and independent learning based on individualized, independent learning courses that students can complete at their own pace
• One on one tutoring
• Small and large group instruction

Wakendaasijig Program

Provides alternative learning environment for students considered to be at risk of not completing high school and have achieved few credits

Assists Ontario Works participants by providing education and training services to enhance employment opportunities

Offers the following support services and programs:

• Access to telephone, fax, computers, photocopier and printing and Job Board
• Basic education
• Child care expenses
• Community placements
• Employment related expenses
• Employment/training start-up benefit
• Full-time employment benefit
• Life skills training
• Literacy and numeracy programs
• Resume and cover letter preparation
• Self-employment assistance
• Transportation expenses
