Vulnerable Victims and Family Fund

Provides financial and court-based supports to enable victims of crime and families of homicide victims to attend court, including:

• Real-time captioning or other equipment for victims with disabilities

• Provides confidential counselling, education, advocacy
• Offers family, relationship, and individual counselling

Offers counselling in the following areas:

• Deaf identity
• Depression, anxiety or bipolar issues
• Domestic violence
• Grief and loss
• Life transitions
• Parenting and family challenges
• Personal development
• Relationship difficulties
• Sexuality
• Substance use
• Trauma (present or past)

Provides pediatric care and services to newborns, children, and youth who have a variety of inherited and acquired health conditions

Services include:

• Birthing Centre
• Children's Treatment Centre
• Infant and Child Development Services
• Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
• Pediatric Ambulatory Care Unit
• Pediatric Unit
• Violence Intervention and Prevention Program

Provides emergency medical treatment and counselling for children who have been victims of sexual assault or physical abuse

Operates as a program under the Healing and Wellness Branch

• Developed as a new program aimed at supporting healthy and whole Métis families

• Support in case meetings and conferencing

• Emergency assistance with clothing, household items, and essential furnishings

• aids for victims with disabilities
• interpretation services
• crime scene cleanup
• government/medical documents
• funeral expenses

Additional assistance for victims of human trafficking includes:

• storage locker
• tattoo removal
• treatment at a recovery facility

Note: No direct reimbursement to victims for above supports


Financial support also available for:

• victims who sustained serious physical injuries during a crime
• parents of child homicide victims
• spouses of homicide victims

Provides various services including the following:

• Individual counselling and referrals to other resources
• Library Services for inmates
• Community Education through displays, discussions
• Guest speakers to speak on various topics

Institutional Visitation

• Visits people at the local jail in response to requests
• Advocates with legal aid and involvement with the family

Pre-Release Planning

• Meets with inmates, at their request, to develop an individual plan of action that can be followed upon release
• Develops a plan based on individual need and may involve networking and collaborating with service providers to assure assistance to clients
• Provides follow-up and support once released

Community Service Order Program

• Provides an option to jail sentences and can be a condition of a probation order for adult and youth offenders
• Works a specific number of hours of community service work
• Focuses on assistance for seniors, non-profit organizations, and physically challenged persons

Reconciliation Between Victims and Offenders

• Facilitates reconciliation between victim and offender where both parties are willing to undergo a group conference to discuss the offence, the effects of the offence on the victim and appropriate consequences for the offender

Youth Referral Project

• Determines the most appropriate consequences with the alleged young offender, parent(s)/caregiver(s), John Howard Society and the police

Anger Management Program

• Teaches people to use appropriate thoughts and actions to express anger
• Teaches skills to help understand themselves and how to identify and express their anger appropriately

Extrajudicial Sanctions/Enhanced Extrajudicial Sanctions

• Provides community based post charge sanctions for youth, outside of formal judicial proceedings, where a young person cannot be adequately dealt with by police cautions, warnings or referrals to community support programs

Sudbury Youth Rocks Program

• Provides music lessons to youth who are at risk of conflict with the law or who do not have the opportunity to play a musical instrument and who want to learn music and join a band

• Offers counselling and treatment services for individuals who have mental health concerns or have been diagnosed with a mental illness

Provides group-based therapy for individuals who are experiencing:

• Bi-Polar Disorder
• Depression
• Generalized Anxiety Disorders
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
• Social Anxiety

Offers one on one counselling services

Offers a variety of core mental health services designed to assist individuals address everyday mental health concerns, mental health problems and mental illness using a combination of Western and Traditional practices

Services offered include:

• Art/Craft Drop-In
• Meditation
• Men's Support Groups and Workshops
• Mindful Way Workshops
• Scheduled counselling sessions
• Soup Drop-In

• Provides free legal advice and assistance to low income earners
• Offers representation in a court or at a tribunal, such as the Social Benefits Tribunal or the Landlord and Tenant Board
• Assists with preparing documents, such as an application to the Landlord and Tenant Board

• Canada Pension Plan (CPP and CPP Disability)
• Housing law for tenants and co-op members only

Provides legal assistance for low-income people

Services include:

• Legal representation for eligible clients who appear in court without a lawyer

Provides a culturally based program to support and address concerns of Indigenous youth who are at risk of negative behaviors

Addressing Violence

• Provides education on how to end violence in Indigenous communities

Education

• Encourages youth to remain in school and provides support for obtaining high school diploma
• Offers homework assistance and time at the Centre to complete homework with access to computers and Internet

General Social Supports

• Provides individual counselling for areas that youth may be struggling with such as socialization and peer pressure
• Offers Native craft classes and regalia making sessions
• Teaches Native dancing, singing and drumming
• Allows the youth to participate in Elder's Circles

Healthy Living and Physical Development

• Holds individual and group educational sessions on healthy lifestyle choices including good nutrition and traditional food preparation
• Supervises non competitive recreational activities

Justice Intervention

• Accompanies any youth registered in agency programs to court proceedings if requested
• Provides education and information about the criminal justice system and court procedures

Youth in Care

• Provides cultural education and support for youth living in foster homes within community and also to biological and foster families

Provides a range of mental health services for children, youth and families

• Helps determines if further duty counsel services are required or if the matter requires Legal Aid Ontario's assistance in retaining a lawyer

Provides assistance in specialized courts such as:

• Mental health
• Drug treatment
• Domestic violence
• Aboriginal persons (Gladue) court

Note: Criminal duty counsel cannot assist with trials
