Family Support Services


Description
  • Offers community based family counselling for children, teens, men, women and families as a group
  • Provides assessments and case management services
  • Provides services of traditional healers
  • Offers community workshops to raise awareness of issues affecting families including substance abuse and family violence
  • Supports community initiatives that promote family healing such as traditional gatherings
Also offers the following family support services including but not limited to:
  • Advocacy and referral to external agencies
  • Assistance in the planning of child's and family's needs
  • Emergency financial assistance for basic needs only in cases where the welfare of child/children is at-risk
  • Home visitation arrangements and supervision to enable parents to visit with their children living in alternative care
Eligibility
  • Members of Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation
  • Children younger than 18 years of age and their families
  • Emergency financial assistance is provided ONLY in extenuating circumstances and each case is treated and considered separately
  • Home visitation is available for families who have children in alternative care; request for visitation must come from birth family

  • Situated along the shores of Crow Lake
  • Community is approx 113 km N of Fort Frances off Hwy 71 and 3 km from Nestor Falls
  • Consists of 4 settlements: Sabaskong Bay 35C, 35D, 35E and 35H as well as the reserves of Agency 30 and Assabaska shared with other First Nations
  • The word onigaming refers to portage
  • Onigaming First Nation lies halfway between Kenora & Rainy River Disticts but is officially part of Kenora District; however, they access some services through the Rainy River District such as the Giizhewaadiziwin Health Access Centre in Fort Frances
