Description
Responsible for stimulating local economy and developing economic initiatives and opportunities for the community
  • Provides information, training and educational workshops to enhance employability skills
  • Responsible for working with the Lands and Resource department for development of plans for the use of traditional lands for community members
  • Works to access funding for band-owned business ventures
  • Provides coaching in areas such as business plan development and assistance in obtaining financial support for people wanting to start own business
Initiatives Seine River First Nation (SRFN) is involved with include:
  • Construction of a community recreation infrastructure project (2002) including an outdoor skating rink, baseball field, and seating system
  • A signed (winter 2012) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Minfocus Exploration Corp regarding exploration activity on SRFN traditional territory
  • A signed MOU (May 2010) and Participation Agreement (Apr 2012) with Rainy River Resources/New Gold for the construction of a power line and development/operation of a gold mine located approx 65 km NW of Fort Frances
  • Implementation of a five-year tourism plan with the proposed building of a community multi-purpose centre; SRFN awarded a million dollar Northern Ontario Heritage Fund grant in early 2014 for the centre
  • Participation in the "Alliance" with other Indigenous communities, municipalities and other Northern leaders and organizations, formed in Jan 2018 to promote forestry and to defend shared forestry interests and lands in Northern and rural Ontario
  • Aug 19, 2019 announcement - $1.15 million in federal gov't funding for economic development in Seine River First Nation; funds allocated for building a new 8,000 sq ft multi-use centre designed to offer business services and training programs, host gatherings, and provide space for commercial operations with remaining funds for fishing camp upgrades to boost tourism including repairs to the camp's electrical system and boathouse, and enhancements to its cabins, docks, and water and wastewater treatment systems
