Economic Development

Responsible for stimulating local economy and developing economic initiatives and opportunities for the community
  • Belongs to the regional Development Corporation Waaskiinaysay Ziibi Inc (WZI), which consists of 5 Lake Nipigon First Nations
  • Provides information, training and educational workshops to enhance employability skills
  • Posts employment opportunities in office
  • Works to access funding for band-owned business ventures
  • Provides coaching in areas such as business plan development and assistance in obtaining financial support for people wanting to start own business
  • Maintains local business directory
  • Assists in the development of plans for the use of traditional lands for community members

Economic initiatives Whitesand First Nation is involved with include:
  • Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Minfocus Exploration Corp, a mining company currently conducting exploration in 3 main mining claims of Weese Luella, Sim Lake and Witchwood River Properties in Whitesand traditional territory
  • Possible wood supply in the form of wood pellets for energy production in the province with a $25-million wood pellet plant and co-generation facility
  • Administers the employment service agreement with Landore Resources, a junior mining company conducting exploration on the Whitesand traditional territory
  • Maintains roads in conjunction with the Ministry of Natural Resources, for harvesting, hunting/fishing and traditional land use
