Economic Development

Responsible for stimulating local economy and developing economic initiatives and opportunities for the community
  • Provides information, training and educational workshops to enhance employability skills
  • Posts employment opportunities in office
  • Works to access funding for Band-owned business ventures
  • Provides coaching in areas such as business plan development and assistance in obtaining financial support for people wanting to start own business
  • Maintains local business directory
  • Facilitates economic development strategic planning sessions

Economic initiatives Shoal Lake 39 First Nation is involved with include:
  • Belongs to the Ontario First Nations Economic Developers Association (OFNEDA)
  • Assistance with on-going negotiations with province of Manitoba and city of Winnipeg about the free use of water from Shoal Lake with no compensation for the community
  • Considering many options for economic sustainability which include mining, forestry, fisheries, cottage development, hog operations, gaming, boys and girls summer camps and water turbines
