Economic Development

  • Responsible for stimulating local economy and developing economic initiatives and opportunities for the community
  • Provides services through guidance and partnership with Waubetek Business Development Corporation (WBDC)
  • Provides information, training and educational workshops to enhance employability skills
  • Posts employment opportunities in Band office
  • Works to access funding for Band-owned business ventures
  • Provides coaching in areas such as business plan development and assistance in obtaining financial support for people wanting to start own business
  • Maintains updated statistics regarding population trends, employment, skills and the community profile

Economic initiatives and on-going projects for Sheguiandah First Nation (SFN) include but not limited to:
  • Ongoing construction of an archaeological interpretive centre
  • Wind projects (SFN is one of the partners of Northland Power's Mclean's Mountain windfarm through a company called Mnidoo Mnising Power)
  • Involved with United Chiefs & Councils of Mnidoo Mnising (UCCMM) Tribal Council claim on lake beds and bottoms
  • Land claim ongoing in French River area on territorial lands
  • Engaged in talks with Wikwemikong FN about land title on Heywood Island
  • Commercial fishing project (started in 2012)
  • Purchase of a 150-acre farm property at corner of Hwy 6 and Indian Mountain Rd
  • Assistance with the opening of a new Resource Centre located in former Band Council Chambers room
  • Architectural drawings for an elders and youth centre; provincial funding announced Feb 2017 from the Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program (ACCGP) and the Aboriginal Economic Development Fund(AEDF) for this project
