Responsible for stimulating local economy and developing economic initiatives and opportunities for the community
  • Provides information, training and educational workshops to enhance employability skills
  • Posts employment opportunities in office
  • Works to access funding for band-owned business ventures
  • Provides coaching in areas such as business plan development and assistance in obtaining financial support for people wanting to start own business
  • Hosts economic development strategic planning sessions
  • Assists in the development of plans for the use of traditional lands for community members
Economic initiatives Wabauskang First Nation is involved with include:
  • Partnership with Aspenware (located in BC) to provide thin pieces of poplar from the Whiskey Jack Forest to be used for making disposable wooden cutlery; contract is with Wabauskang's Makoose Wood Innovations, a local forestry company managed and owned by Doug Riffel
  • On-going negotiations with Rubicon Minerals over its Phoenix Gold project and an impending Impacts Benefit Agreement (IBA)
  • Joint signed declaration with Grassy Narrows and Whitefish Bay First Nations stating their desire to take over the Sustainable Forest License of the Whiskey Jack Forest
  • A Collaboration Agreement with Goldcorp Inc, signed Jan 2015 to work together in the development and operations of Red Lake Gold Mines
  • Liaison with Four Directions Ventures Limited Partnership (Four Directions), an economic development agency acting on behalf of the Wabauskang First Nation and Hy-Tech Drilling Ltd. (Hy-Tech) who have entered into a joint venture to provide drilling services within the Traditional Territory of the Wabauskang First Nation
  • An exploration agreement signed in Apr 2020 with Great Bear Resources Ltd of Vancouver, BC for mining exploration in the area
