Land Use Planning

Represents the community in all land use initiatives with a focus on the preservation of traditional lands
  • Acts as the liaison and maintains all documentation between community members, governments and the Ministry of Natural Resources on all land issues
  • Signed a Terms of Reference agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry on Nov 20, 2017 for the Weenusk First Nation Community Based Land Use Plan
  • Identified in the Terms of Reference are the requirements to complete the mandatory components of a plan, as specified under the Far North Act, 2010
  • Included in the outcomes of approved land use plan are defined land use areas and desired and compatible activities, and provision of strategic direction for the manner in which activities should take place
  • Planning will proceed in a manner that respects Weenuski Inninowuk traditional activities
  • Allows community to liaise fully with companies undertaking resource development in traditional Weenusk First Nation territory including mining developments, forestry projects and hydro electric power projects
