Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative

  • Assists individuals experiencing homelessness to obtain and retain housing
  • Assists individuals at risk of homelessness to remain housed
Services provided include:
Emergency Shelter Solutions
  • Assists with finding a temporary safe bed and necessary basic needs
Homelessness Prevention
  • Provides financial assistance for emergency needs, rental and utility arrears and for basic necessities
Housing Support Services which can include financial assistance for:
  • Gas and hydro deposits
  • Hook-up fees
  • Household furnishings
  • Last month's rent deposit
  • Moving and transportation to the home of the recipient
Note: This program does not provide financial assistance to individuals living on a First Nations Reserve. Individuals can contact their Band Office to inquire about rent or utility arrears
Hours of Operation
Mon-Fri 8:30 am-12 noon, 1 pm-4:15 pm, Sep-JunMon-Fri 8 am-12 noon, 1 pm-3:45 pm, Jul-Aug
Homeless individuals or victims of domestic violence exiting a shelter who require the following:
  • Rent Deposits
  • First and Last Month Rent
  • Gas and Hydro deposits and connection fees
  • Items necessary to maintain the health and well-being of the applicant up to a maximum of $750.00(such as Fridge and stove)
  • Individuals who have received an eviction notice due to rental arrears, or
  • Individuals who have had a utility or the heating to the current residence cut off, or
  • Individuals who have received a disconnection notice for a utility or the heating to the current residence, AND
  • have satisfied the Administrator of the program that they will not be evicted and/or will retain the use of their utilities if payment is made
Individuals who have experienced a disaster such as fire, flood or storms may access funding to replace household items necessary to maintain the health and well-being of the applicant up to a maximum of $750

Application Process
  • Contact the Ontario Works Manager or contact the local Ontario Works office
  • Individuals on Ontario Works (OW) or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) must apply for Ontario Works Discretionary Benefits prior to applying for assistance through CHPI
