Business Economic Development

  • Responsible for stimulating local economy and developing economic initiatives and opportunities for the community
  • Provides information, training and educational workshops to enhance employability skills
  • Posts employment opportunities in office and on website
  • Works to access funding for Band-owned business ventures
  • Provides coaching in areas such as business plan development and assistance in obtaining financial support for people wanting to start own business
  • Maintains local business directory
  • Assists in the development of plans for the use of traditional lands for community members
Economic initiatives Bearskin Lake First Nation is involved with include:
  • Advisory capacity for Northern Store
  • Business association with Cellular phone, McKoop Lake Tourist Camp, Michikan Lake Business Centre (Restaurant and Motel), Bearskin Lake Petro and Bearskin Lake Cable
  • Assistance and business advisory for private businesses
  • Partnership with 11 other First Nation communities in the Wasaya Group Inc (WGI), who own several businesses including Wasaya Airways LP
  • Joint ownership of Wataynikaneyap Power with 23 other First Nations and Goldcorps, to reinforce transmission lines to Pickle Lake and Musselwhite Mine and to construct new transmission lines north of Pickle Lake to service remote First Nation communities
  • Interests in the Wellington Inn in Sioux Lookout
  • Advisory for expansion of community centre with completion in 2014; includes new meeting/recreational facilities, space for community programs and events, and a new cafeteria
  • A signed business partnership (2014) with North Star Air Ltd along with its affiliate Cargo North
  • Letter of Understanding with North Star Air which allows for revenue sharing between the airline and community with a goal to generate short and long term socio-economic development opportunities, gain financial benefits back to the community and provide increased air transportation services and options to community members
  • On-going work on proposal for all-weather road
  • A FedNor investment of $47,250 announced Jun 2016 in Bearskin Lake First Nation to help identify and prioritize viable economic development opportunities through the hiring of a youth intern for a one-year period to assist with the development of an economic development strategic plan
