Description
Provides Animal Welfare Inspectors to investigate and protect animals from cruelty, abuse and neglect
  • Northern Animal Welfare Unit inspectors have the powers of a peace officer for the purpose of enforcing animal welfare-related legislation, and has the legal authority to:
    • make the owner of the animal address any neglect/abuse
    • remove an animal from an owner's care for allowing ongoing distress/abuse
    • charge a person under provincial or federal laws for animal cruelty/neglect

The Timmins and District Humane Society oversees animal welfare services in the cities of Timmins, Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, North Bay and Temiskaming-Cochrane. Thunder Bay inspectors, under the umbrella of the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society, are also included in the the Northern Animal Welfare Unit.
